Our readers can’t get enough kika capsules. Whether you love the way they save you money, simplify your life, or ensure you always have something fashionable to wear, we agree with Style Expert/Fashion Blogger Bridgette Raes’s concept of “buy less and wear more”. Get ready to learn what goes into making a truly workable capsule wardrobe.
Build a capsule that fits your lifestyle: business casual, work at home, mom on the go, etc. Make sure each item in your capsule suits that goal. Create one larger capsule for your entire fall/winter wardrobe or create several smaller groupings–one for work/one for play, to showcase different styles, or to play with more colors.
Create the most looks from the least number of pieces. There’s no magic number of pieces to use–you can use as few as 5 and upwards of 30. The goal is to use the fewest number possible to suit your needs, incorporating as many pieces from your own wardrobe as possible. Only choose pieces that work well together, making them easily re-mixable.
**For this capsule we used 9 pieces that can make 50+ outfits: Gabby cocoon cardi in Merlot, Candie wrap jacket in Black, Nancy blazer in Black, Charissa dress in Winter White, Karen long sleeve top in Ash, Dawson 3/4 sleeve top in Winter White/Black Stripe, Skinny Pant in Black, Skinny Pant in Winter White, and Leggings in Black.
Use the Base, Accent, & Pop formula. Carefully choose figure flattering silhouettes for each.
Base: The foundation or core of your wardrobe: suits, pants, skirts, jackets/blazers, and dresses. Usually, but not always, these items are in neutral tones. While not always exciting on their own, their basic nature allows them to readily mix and match. (We used: Skinny pant, Charissa dress, Leggings, Candie jacket, and Nancy Blazer)
Accent: These include your tops, cardigans, and colored tanks. These pieces add interest, color, pattern, and texture. Always make sure your styles and colors work with each of your base items. (We used: Gabby cardi, Karen top, Dawson top)
Pop: This is the FUN part– jewelry, shoes, handbags, scarves, and belts. These keep your looks from feeling repetitive and unfinished. You can rework your base and accent pieces for years by changing/updating your pop items. Never underestimate the power of accessories to transform your look and add unlimited wardrobing options!
Apply the Base, Accent, & Pop formula to color. Select a color palette that coordinates and compliments your coloring.
Base: Your foundation of neutrals. We used Winter White and Black.
Accent: Complementary tones/prints. We used Ash and a Black/White stripe.
Pop: Your most flattering burst of color that pairs with both your base and accent colors. We used Merlot.
Shop Smart. Begin in your closet– you might be surprised what’s hiding in there! Don’t be afraid to pair new things together. When it’s time to shop, make sure you have a plan of action and only purchase items that fit your plan or coordinate with what you already own.
